That frightened look is human. He is a persecuted refugee, he is the gaze of Christ who crosses himself again
They are the new “enemy people”, the enemy of Greece.
This “absurd logic” and the business of “demonizing” immigrants is not a Greek invention.
Trump was the first to call the migration of immigrants into the United States an “invasion.” The ubiquitous (extreme) right followed. Immigrants have become “invaders” who allegedly attack the “homeland, home, schools, faith, women, our children, our European culture”.
The message about “invaders” is given by the European Union when it talks about the need to “protect the European way of life”. The same message is given by the Greek prime minister when he talks about a smooth pace of settlement so that there is no population change!
It is the government media, the conservative and especially the far-right newspapers, but also institutions such as the Church, which regulate the xenophobic action, planting hatred in the soul until complete phobia is achieved, the absolute obsolescence of the persecutors, the domestic Ku Klux Klan.
It is the (extreme) right that appeals to an asthmatic mass of faceless people, feeding them Christian theories of the Apocalypse and messianic expectations mixed with political conspiracy theories. It is the faithful who will follow the pope when he goes around the icon to exorcise the fires. They are the ones who will worship the holy slipper and the holy girdle! They are the ones who stand in the queues for IDs so that they will not be given the devil’s “chips”! Televangelists and marketers, Bible officers, Sunday missionaries trap souls, mold them, and then send them into “battle.”
The same is happening on the other side of the Atlantic: Protestant fundamentalists in the United States discover the enemy in secular humanism, in humanity. Solidarity is devalued. “Love thy neighbor” is limited to extinction.
In the soil of fear and demonization, racists and fascists are born, those who, because they cannot see themselves in the mirror, will reconstruct their deconstructed selves through hatred, killing. They killed Luqman and Saftar.
